I AM A REVOLUTIONARY.

I AM. I AM.

The Academy of Music Theatre is honored to produce the US premiere of Afeni, a one-woman storytelling show by playwright Adam Bailey.

Afeni is based on the experiences of Afeni Shakur, mother of the rapper Tupac Shakur, surrounding the events surrounding of the 1969 “Panther 21” trial and her involvement in the Black Panthers. During this trial, it was discovered  Shakur opted to defend herself in the trial, and her cross-examination of an NYPD detective brought to light that several undercover police agents had infiltrated the group and organized most of the unlawful activities for which members had been arrested. Shakur and her colleagues were acquitted in 1971, and this experience led to her lifelong dedication to social justice and activism.

Playwright Adam Bailey describes the style of this piece as embracing a “storyteller persona, who can be affected and changed by the story and who can act out moments, but who is always present and never lost”; the “scenes are influenced by different characters’ POVs” and “there are moments when the storyteller is more possessed by the subjects of her tale than others.”

Afeni explores a moment of human experience through the lens of the cultural, societal, and historical understandings of the time.
